OpenAI Updates Codex to Enable Desktop and Computer Control

OpenAI updated Codex to act as a software development assistant capable of controlling macOS screens, clicking applications, and managing remote SSH connections.

OpenAI released a major update to Codex, transforming the tool from a code generation utility into a comprehensive software development assistant. The update introduces computer control for macOS users, enabling Codex to view screens, interact with applications, and type inputs using its own cursor.

New workflow capabilities include an in-app browser for web-based tasks, the ability to review pull requests, and the establishment of SSH connections to remote computers. To assist with visual development, the company integrated gpt-image-1.5 for the creation of game assets and design mock-ups.

For long-term project management, Codex now features task scheduling and a memory preview to retain interaction history and user preferences. The release also adds over 90 plugins, including integrations for GitLab, Atlassian Rovo, and the Microsoft Suite.

These features are rolling out to ChatGPT desktop users. Memory and personalization functions will follow for users in the European Union and United Kingdom, as well as those in Enterprise and Education tiers.
