Central Banks Shift Gold Reserves Away From United States

Global central banks are increasing gold stockpiles and relocating reserves from the U.S. to diversify assets amid rising geopolitical instability.

Central banks worldwide are increasing gold stockpiles and relocating reserves away from the United States to mitigate risks from geopolitical instability and trade tensions. According to estimates from Goldman Sachs, central banks purchased 79 tonnes of gold in August, a figure more than four times the average seen before 2022.

People's Bank of China is a primary driver of this trend as it seeks to diversify its reserves away from G7 currencies, specifically the U.S. dollar. European institutions are also adjusting their holdings to improve liquidity and security. De Nederlandsche Bank moved 86 tonnes of gold from New York and Ottawa to London to better prepare for potential crises, while the Bank of France sold 129 tonnes of gold in New York to acquire higher-purity gold within Europe.

These movements are reflected in August data, which shows a 40-tonne decline in foreign holdings at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a corresponding 46-tonne increase at the Bank of England.
