Ireland Extends Fuel Tax Cuts Until October Budget

The Government of Ireland extended fuel excise tax cuts until at least the October Budget to mitigate rising fuel costs, which have trended toward 2 euros per litre this month. Despite the extension, officials expressed concern that prices may still exceed the 2 euro mark.

To secure formal approval for the measure, the Dáil will be recalled for one day next Friday, interrupting its summer recess. Minister of State Seán Canney stated that fuel supports could remain in place until prices return to normality.

Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy supported the decision to avoid phasing out the cuts on September 1. He argued that it was not the right time to compound an international fuel crisis with a domestic taxing increase, though he acknowledged that these temporary measures cannot continue indefinitely.
