Winston Peters Endorses Chris Bishop in Hutt South Race
NZ First leader Winston Peters has endorsed National Party MP Chris Bishop for the Hutt South seat to help him secure his parliamentary survival.
NZ First leader Winston Peters issued a rare endorsement for National Party MP Chris Bishop in the battleground Hutt South seat during the 2026 election. Peters described Bishop as "a cut above the regular MP," stating that without such support, Bishop might be removed from Parliament. Peters clarified that the endorsement applies specifically to Bishop as an individual rather than the National Party.
Chris Bishop accepted the surprise support, noting he is happy to have the endorsement as he fights for political survival. The contest is particularly high-stakes for Bishop because low polling for the National Party makes it unlikely that unsuccessful candidates will be elected via the party list. The move was mirrored by NZ First candidate Alastair Boyce, who urged party supporters to give their candidate vote to Bishop.
Labour candidate Ginny Andersen argued that the endorsement could harm Bishop's chances, suggesting that Peters' rhetoric is divisive and racist toward migrant communities. While Bishop has highlighted infrastructure progress in the region, Andersen has focused her campaign on the need for greater hope and future opportunities for residents of the Hutt Valley.
