Political Yard Signs Reduce Home Marketability and Buyer Interest

Real estate professionals warn that political signage can chill prospective buyers and damage agent reputations, despite having no impact on official home appraisal values.

Real estate professionals across the United States report that political yard signs can negatively impact home marketability by chilling prospective buyers. While these signs do not affect official appraisal values, Monica Nalbantoglu, Director of Sales with the Rob Jensen Co., notes that they significantly alter buyer perception. Buyers often avoid neighborhoods with signs that conflict with their personal beliefs or appear aggressive, leading to concerns about whether they will feel welcome or safe in the community.

To mitigate these effects, experts advise sellers to focus on tangible property improvements and the overall condition of the home, as they cannot control the political expressions of their neighbors. This trend has led to a broader push for neutrality within the industry.

Representatives from the National Association of Realtors and other industry professionals recommend that agents remain politically neutral to avoid limiting their client base. Wendy Martorano, a Realtor with the Yackley Group, suggests that professionals must stay neutral to ensure potential buyers are not deterred by an agent's political leanings. Ron Phipps, a former president of the National Association of Realtors, warned that a single political comment can destroy a professional reputation.
