New York Energy Prices Surge Toward Record Levels

Energy costs are climbing across New York, with both gasoline and heating oil prices reaching levels significantly higher than the previous year. In the Buffalo and Niagara Falls region, AAA reports that the average gas price has reached $4.34 per gallon, an increase of nearly 15 cents over the last month. This current average is more than a dollar higher than the $3.20 average recorded during the same period in 2025. While still below the all-time record of $4.90 set in June 2022, current trends suggest a new record could be reached by October or November.

Simultaneously, heating oil prices have surged to unprecedented levels for the month of September. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority reports the statewide average rose from $5.468 to $5.740 per gallon in just over a week. This represents a 55% increase over the $3.70 average from September 2025 and exceeds the previous September high of $4.888 set in 2022.

These price hikes are creating significant financial pressure for homeowners, particularly in the Hudson Valley, where filling a standard 275-gallon heating oil tank now costs approximately $1,579. For motorists seeking relief from rising gas costs, membership warehouses such as Costco, BJ's, and Sam's Club continue to offer fuel for less than $4.00 per gallon.
