Education Department Issues Student Loan Forgiveness Golden Letters

The U.S. Department of Education notified qualifying borrowers of loan forgiveness while managing systemic data glitches and repayment plan transitions.

The United States Department of Education issued a new batch of golden letters this week, notifying qualifying borrowers of their eligibility for student loan forgiveness under income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. While some borrowers will receive automatic discharges by early September, the agency is facing significant administrative and systemic failures.

Borrowers report payment miscalculations, incorrect eligibility data, and a data glitch that erased months of earned credit for participants in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. The department has stopped providing public data on forgiveness processing and has not yet restored an IDR tracking feature on StudentAid.gov that was removed over a year ago.

These issues occur as the department implements reforms under the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act. The agency launched the Repayment Assistance Plan and expanded the IBR plan, but borrowers in the SAVE plan must transition to other plans within 90 days to avoid forced enrollment in Standard repayment.
