Alphabet Stock Plummets After Top AI Researchers Join Rivals

Alphabet Inc. shares fell over 7% as Nobel laureate John Jumper and Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer left the company for Anthropic and OpenAI.

Alphabet Inc. shares plummeted as much as 7.2% on Monday, June 22, 2026, marking the company's steepest one-day decline since May 2025. The sell-off erased between $225 billion and $270 billion in market capitalization following the high-profile departures of two leading artificial intelligence researchers.

John Jumper, a 2024 Nobel Prize winner and vice president at Google DeepMind, announced his departure for Anthropic on Friday. His exit followed the previous week's announcement that Noam Shazeer, vice president of engineering and co-lead of the Gemini project, was leaving to join OpenAI. These moves have intensified investor fears of a brain drain and a loss of technological leadership in an intensifying celebrity era of AI talent wars.

Market anxiety is further compounded by concerns over Alphabet's aggressive spending. The company has raised $141 billion in debt and equity since October to expand AI infrastructure, with projected spending for fiscal 2026 reaching up to $190 billion. Investors are increasingly scrutinizing the gap between these costs and actual earnings, especially following comments from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella suggesting the AI market has become commoditized.

Alphabet responded by stating it remains confident in its ability to attract and retain top-tier talent, maintaining that its high talent density ensures resiliency.
