Giorgia Meloni Deploys Soldiers as Italy Cost-of-Living Protests Spread

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni deployed 500 soldiers to Milan and announced a $195 million aid package to quell nationwide protests over rising food and fuel costs.

Widespread protests and strikes have erupted across Italy as citizens demonstrate against the rising costs of food, rent, and fuel. In northern cities including Milan and Venice, students have marched against economic stagnation and dilapidated school infrastructure, with some demonstrations in Milan devolving into rioting and looting.

In southern Italy, truckers and farmers have blockaded highway exits to demand financial relief, citing a 32 percent increase in diesel prices between February and October. Some demonstrators have criticized the government's continued financial and military aid to Ukraine during the domestic crisis.

Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, responded by announcing a $195 million tax credit package for farmers, fishers, and truckers. She also deployed 500 soldiers to Milan as a preventive security measure to maintain order. Meloni dismissed criticisms of the military presence, arguing that soldiers contribute to safety while violent individuals seek to turn public squares into battlegrounds.

Opposition leaders Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte have visited southern protesters to offer support. The unrest, partly inspired by similar demonstrations in France, occurs ahead of national government elections scheduled for next year, where Meloni will seek a second term.
