Joint Rebel Ambush Kills Scores of Malian Soldiers

A joint operation by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the al-Qaida affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) ambushed a Malian army convoy near Tabankort on July 18, 2026. The convoy was traveling from Anefis to Gao and included logistics fuel tankers. Local officials report more than 50 soldiers and state-backed militia members were killed, while at least 24 soldiers were taken prisoner.

The FLA released footage purportedly showing soldiers surrendering and being executed on the ground. The ambush follows a period of intense fighting for the strategic town of Anefis, which the Malian army and Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries had retaken from rebels on July 10. While some reports indicated Africa Corps personnel were in the convoy, other accounts state Russian forces avoided casualties because they had already arrived in Gao.

On July 19, the Government of Mali launched counterattacks and precision strikes to neutralize terrorists and allow the remaining convoy elements to break free. The military government is currently investigating the tactical failures that left the convoy vulnerable during the assault.
