Bank of Thailand Plans Interest Rate Normalization
The Bank of Thailand intends to raise interest rates from 1% to a normal range of 1.5% to 2% as the economy recovers.
The Bank of Thailand plans to normalize interest rates from the current accommodative level of 1% as the national economy recovers. The central bank currently maintains historically low rates to support growth that has remained below potential, but officials indicate a typical policy range for Thailand is between 1.5% and 2%.
The timing of these rate hikes remains conditional on economic data, specifically the stability of inflation and exchange rate developments. The bank expects the economy to remain resilient, noting that recent flooding was too localized to significantly impact overall GDP figures.
Regarding currency stability, the bank reported that the Thai baht has depreciated 6% since the start of the year, a shift it attributes to economic fundamentals and oil shock exposure. To stabilize the currency, the bank implemented measures to encourage gold trading in US dollars rather than Thai baht, which has reduced the correlation between gold prices and the currency.
