Britain-Palestine Group Warns Banks Against Israel E1 Settlement Investment

The Britain-Palestine group of MPs urged British financial institutions to avoid investing in Israel's E1 settlement project ahead of planned UK trade sanctions.

The Britain-Palestine group of MPs has issued written warnings to British banks and financial institutions, urging them to avoid investing in Israel's E1 settlement project. The warnings come as the Israeli government seeks bids for tenders to construct up to 3,400 houses, with one tender deadline set for October 25.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband recently announced plans for a complete trade ban on illegal settlements and sanctions for collaborators. However, the group noted that the secondary legislation required to implement these measures may take six to nine months to pass. Members of the group, including MPs Debbie Abrahams and Andy McDonald, emphasized that institutions should assess the legal and reputational risks of their commitments before the formal sanctions regime is finalized.

The E1 project is highly contentious because it would split territory intended for a Palestinian state. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that the project "practically erases the two-state delusion."
