NATO Eastern Flank States Accelerate Military Fortifications Against Russia

NATO eastern border countries are expanding military defenses and reserves as the Kremlin describes the conflict in Ukraine as a real war between Russia and the West.

NATO's eastern flank states are accelerating the construction of military fortifications and expanding reserves amid growing uncertainty over U.S. commitments to Article 5 under President Donald Trump. Finland is implementing a total defense strategy, mobilizing up to one million reservists and raising defense spending toward a goal of 5% of GDP by 2035. Finland has also lifted bans on nuclear weapon storage.

Poland is investing €10 billion in the Eastern Shield, a system of concrete barriers and the SAN anti-drone wall. Simultaneously, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are jointly constructing the Baltic Defense Line. To slow potential Russian advances, Finland and the Baltic states have withdrawn from the Ottawa Convention to allow the use of anti-personnel landmines.

The escalation follows statements from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who characterized the conflict in Ukraine as a real war between Russia and the West. These tensions are compounded by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's confirmation that Washington provides intelligence and analytical support to help Kyiv plan drone attacks and evade Russian defenses. These security developments and the shifting U.S. military footprint in Europe are expected to dominate the upcoming NATO Summit.
