Google Partners With Voltus for Mid-Atlantic Virtual Power Plant
Google partnered with Voltus to create a virtual power plant providing 1,070 megawatts of capacity for its AI data centers in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Google partnered with Voltus to establish a virtual power plant within the PJM Mid-Atlantic grid to secure electricity for its artificial intelligence data centers. The agreement provides Google with up to 1,070 megawatts of electric capacity, an amount roughly equivalent to the output of a large nuclear reactor.
Rather than constructing new traditional power plants, the initiative uses financial incentives and automated technology, including smart thermostats and batteries, to pay homes and businesses to reduce energy consumption during peak demand. This strategy frees up existing grid capacity to support the rapid growth of AI infrastructure.
The project addresses a growing energy deficit in the PJM region, which serves 67 million people across 13 states. Data center expansion in the area has outpaced the construction of new power plants, leading to increased electricity prices and public backlash over the energy requirements of AI. Google describes the virtual power plant as a critical short-term solution to meet capacity needs at speed and scale.
