Egypt Seeks Parliamentary Approval to Defend Saudi Arabia

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for an emergency parliamentary session to authorize military action to defend Saudi Arabian sovereignty if requested by the kingdom.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for an emergency session of parliament on October 17 to authorize potential military action to defend Saudi Arabia. Speaking at a Military Academy graduation ceremony, el-Sisi pledged that Egypt would take necessary measures to protect Saudi security and sovereignty if requested by King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He specified that any such intervention would be strictly defensive rather than offensive.

This move follows remarks made by el-Sisi on October 15 in New Cairo, where he declared that any threat to the security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region directly impacts Egypt's own national security. He stated that Egypt would not allow the borders of Saudi Arabia to be violated or permit threats to shipping lanes in the Red Sea, characterizing the security link as a shared strategic interest.

During his recent addresses, el-Sisi also touched upon other regional and domestic issues. He noted Egypt's mediation efforts regarding the conflict in Sudan and reaffirmed his support for a Palestinian state. Regarding his own political future, he affirmed that his presidency will end in 2030 and ruled out any changes to the constitution.
