Google LLC and OpenAI Inc. Adopt SynthID Watermarking for AI Content

Google LLC and OpenAI Inc. are integrating SynthID invisible watermarks and C2PA credentials to help users identify and verify AI-generated images across various platforms.

Google and OpenAI Inc. announced a coordinated effort on May 19, 2026, to deploy a multi-layered AI detection system using SynthID invisible watermarks and C2PA content credentials. The initiative aims to provide a resilient method of content provenance that persists even after images are cropped, resized, or screenshotted.

Google integrated SynthID technology, developed by Google DeepMind, directly into Google Search and the Chrome browser. Chrome users can now right-click images to verify their origin, while Android users can utilize Circle to Search to determine if an image is AI-generated. The system combines C2PA metadata, which can specify if a photo was taken on a Pixel phone, with SynthID signals to ensure authenticity.

OpenAI Inc. is applying these labels to images generated via ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. To support this, OpenAI Inc. joined the C2PA Conformance Program and is previewing a public verification portal for users to upload images and check for provenance signals. Other major AI developers, including Nvidia Corporation, ElevenLabs, and Kakao, have also committed to adopting the SynthID standard to increase the universality of AI content identification.
