MultiChoice Slashes DStv Prices in Kenya to Regain Market Share
MultiChoice Group is reducing its top DStv package price by 38% and consolidating service tiers in Kenya to combat subscriber losses and rising competition.
MultiChoice Group, owned by France's Canal+, is implementing a major pricing and product overhaul in Kenya effective November 5. The company is consolidating its six DStv product lines into four new tiers: Starter (KES 750), Select (KES 1,500), Sports (KES 3,000), and Ultimate (KES 7,300). The top-tier Ultimate package sees a 38% price reduction, dropping from KES 11,700 to KES 7,300.
MultiChoice Group is also restructuring its GOtv offerings into four tiers ranging from KES 300 to KES 3,000 and reducing hardware costs, with HD decoders and dishes now priced at KES 1,500. To attract new users, the company is expanding its streaming services to remove the need for satellite installations and introducing a SuperSport KICKOFF channel for live football.
These changes are part of a broader turnaround strategy led by Canal+, which has committed approximately €100 million to stabilize the operator's finances. The move follows a decline in total African subscribers to 14.4 million by the end of 2025, driven by rising living costs and competition from digital terrestrial providers like StarTimes and mobile broadband. Alongside pricing cuts, the company plans to increase investment in African storytelling through new local productions such as 'Chamaa'.
