Prashant Kishor Debuts in Bankipur By-Election to Challenge BJP
Prashant Kishor will make his electoral debut in the July 30 Bankipur by-election, framing the contest as a referendum on the BJP-led Bihar government.
Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor announced his candidacy for the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, marking his formal electoral debut. The seat became vacant after Nitin Nabin, the BJP national president and long-time MLA, resigned to join the Rajya Sabha. Polling is scheduled for July 30, with results expected between August 3 and August 4.
Kishor characterized the contest as a referendum on the two-month-old government led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. He deliberately chose the Bankipur constituency, a traditional BJP stronghold for over three decades, to challenge the party's dominance and encourage voters to move beyond caste, religion, and fear-based voting. Kishor is utilizing a grassroots strategy of neighborhood town halls to promote a new political order in Bihar, viewing the by-election as a litmus test for Jan Suraaj after the party failed to win any seats in 2025.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet named its candidate, though several probables have been reported. BJP Bihar chief Sanjay Saraogi expressed confidence in a massive victory for the NDA, while Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticized Kishor's motives. Other contenders include social activist Veena Manvi, supported by Tej Pratap Yadav's Janshakti Janata Dal. Nominations for the seat are open from July 6 to July 13.
