Comstock and NextEra Plan $16 Billion Texas Gas Plant

Comstock Resources and NextEra Energy are developing a $16 billion gas-fired power plant in Anderson County, Texas. The facility is designed to provide up to 5.2 gigawatts of capacity to support the energy demands of heavy manufacturing and AI data centers.
The project is partially funded through a $550 billion U.S. investment commitment from the Government of Japan, established under a recent trade agreement. This investment coincides with efforts by Japanese firms, including Mitsui, to secure global LNG offtake agreements to power sovereign AI infrastructure and semiconductor plants.
While current production in the Haynesville shale basin can meet existing needs, the project highlights a growing competition for U.S. natural gas. Analysts warn that the simultaneous expansion of hyperscaler campuses and LNG terminals by 2030 could strain pipeline capacity and increase domestic energy prices.
