Lagos Launches Two Power Projects to Stabilize Business Electricity
Elektron Energy and Sahara Power Enterprise Group launched two new power plants in Lagos to reduce corporate reliance on the unreliable national grid.
Two major power infrastructure projects were launched in Lagos, Nigeria, to address chronic national grid unreliability and reduce corporate dependence on diesel generators. Elektron Energy unveiled the Victoria Island Power (VIPL) project, a 40-megawatt embedded gas-fired plant designed to provide dedicated electricity to businesses in the Victoria Island commercial district. Developed in collaboration with Eko Electricity Distribution Company and licensed by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the facility utilizes engine technology from Wärtsilä and is scheduled for inauguration in the first quarter of 2027.
The VIPL project is supported by institutional capital from the ARM-Harith Infrastructure Fund, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, InfraCredit, and the Bank of Industry. According to Elektron Energy, the project aims to provide reliable power without the burden of fuel logistics or operational disruption.
In a separate initiative, Sahara Power Enterprise Group broke ground on a $12 million, 12-megawatt Independent Power Plant in Ogba. This project, developed in collaboration with Ikeja Electric Plc, is intended to improve electricity reliability for residents and businesses across Ogba, Acme Road, and Wemco Road.
