Ethiopian Forces Seize Mekelle Amid Regional Diplomatic Collapse
Ethiopian federal forces recaptured the Tigrayan capital of Mekelle as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed severed ties with Eritrea over accusations of rebel support.
The Ethiopian National Defense Forces and allied Tigray Peace Force recaptured Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, on October 4, 2026. The seizure followed a tactical withdrawal by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which had launched a wide-scale offensive on September 23 alongside a seven-party alliance seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The TPLF initially seized airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire, but federal forces reversed these gains, regaining control of Alula Aba Nega Airport before entering the city center.
The conflict has triggered a severe diplomatic crisis in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia severed diplomatic ties with Eritrea, closed its embassy in Asmara, and expelled 10 diplomats, accusing Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of backing the rebels. Eritrea denied these claims and accused Ethiopia of planning a forced seizure of the port of Assab to secure Red Sea access. Egypt also engaged in reciprocal diplomatic expulsions amid long-standing disputes over Nile water rights.
Violence has expanded beyond Mekelle into the Afar and Amhara regions, with airstrikes killing at least 17 people in Adwa and Sheraro on October 5. While the TPLF has shifted to guerrilla tactics, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, sworn in for a new term on October 5, reiterated that sea access is vital for national modernization. In response to the instability, leaders from Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan met in Alamein, Egypt, to coordinate regional security and call for peaceful resolutions.
