Xpeng to License EV and AI Tech to Foreign Firms

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng is expanding its business model to license its electrical and electronic architecture, cockpit systems, Turing AI chips, and advanced-driver assistance software to foreign automakers and software developers. This move aims to create new revenue streams beyond vehicle sales.

The strategy builds on a partnership with Volkswagen Group that began in July 2023 with a $700 million investment for a 4.99% stake. This collaboration led to the mass production of the ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV in March 2026. While Xpeng remained loss-making in the first half of the current financial year, revenue from services and other businesses nearly doubled, achieving a margin of 75.1% primarily due to the Volkswagen partnership.

Xpeng is also extending its licensing offerings to include robotaxis, humanoid robots, and other physical AI applications. The company recently produced its general-purpose humanoid robot, IRON, with commercial deliveries scheduled for 2027. CEO He Xiaopeng stated that humanoid robots could eventually generate significantly higher margins than vehicles.
