Activists Unveil Melting Statue to Protest Ron DeSantis Climate Policy

Environmental activists unveiled a gallium statue of Governor Ron DeSantis in Tallahassee that melted to reveal a skull, symbolizing his rejection of climate change action.

Environmental activists from 350Action and the advertising agency Uncommon unveiled a life-sized statue of Ron DeSantis in Tallahassee to protest the governor's rejection of climate change action. The statue, cast from gallium, melted in the Florida heat to reveal a skull beneath the governor's face, a visual metaphor for the consequences of climate inaction.

During his eight-year tenure, DeSantis blocked municipal pollution reductions and removed terms like "climate change" from state law. He has characterized these actions as rejecting the agenda of "radical green zealots." The protest occurs as DeSantis's term ends in January and Florida prepares for midterm elections.

Candice Fortin, a campaign manager at 350Action, stated the protest highlights the need to defeat climate deniers at the ballot box. The political climate remains aligned with DeSantis's views, as GOP candidate Byron Donalds, who is favored to win the governorship, has also stated he does not accept the link between human actions and climate change.
