Corus Entertainment Cuts 43 Jobs Amid Production Centralization

Corus Entertainment eliminated 43 television jobs and centralized Global News production in Toronto to address severe financial instability and declining advertising revenue.

Corus Entertainment Inc. eliminated 43 television jobs across Canada on July 16, 2026, as part of a restructuring effort to centralize Global News production in Toronto. The layoffs hit Western Canada hardest, with 28 positions cut in Alberta and additional losses in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, British Columbia, Ontario, and the Maritimes. The company is shuttering studios and control rooms in Calgary and Edmonton, shifting those operations to a central hub by the end of August.

These cuts come as Corus faces critical financial distress, including a $1.16 billion debt load and a 70 percent drop in share value over the last year. CEO John Gossling attributed the decline to pressure on linear television advertising. The broadcaster is currently awaiting Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approval for a recapitalization plan to forgive approximately $500 million in debt through a new parent corporation, NewCo, led by Canso Investment Counsel Ltd.

Corus denied reports that it is shutting down local newsrooms in Calgary and Edmonton, clarifying that anchors and reporters will remain in those markets. This denial followed an AI-generated summary by the blog CMCalgary that incorrectly claimed newsrooms were closing. Unifor, the union representing the workers, condemned the layoffs and criticized federal government delays regarding the Online Streaming Act and the Independent Local News Fund. Minority shareholder Sébastien Ouellet suggested the layoffs were used to create a narrative that the company's restructuring must be concluded quickly.
