Alberta Prepares for Secession Referendum Amid U.S. Interference Claims

Alberta will hold a referendum on October 19 to decide whether to pursue secession from Canada amid internal party strife and allegations of U.S. interference.

Alberta is preparing for a provincial referendum on October 19, 2026, to determine if the province should remain in Canada or begin the legal process for a binding vote on separation. Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, called the vote following grassroots petitions and legislative changes that lowered petition thresholds and removed judicial oversight of referendum questions.

While Smith maintains she supports an independent Alberta within a united Canada, she faces escalating tension within the United Conservative Party. Separatist activists, including Jeffrey Rath and Dennis Modry, have attempted to remove Smith from office for her refusal to support full independence. Rath has claimed that those favoring separatism constitute a supermajority of the party membership.

The movement has faced backlash following reports that separatist leaders met with U.S. government representatives in Washington and Republican operatives in Calgary. These leaders allegedly offered U.S. officials a share of oil royalties, precious metals, and railway access to Alaska in exchange for a one-for-one currency conversion. Smith denounced these offers as "absurd" and "ridiculous," stating the resources were not the leaders' to offer.

Simultaneously, the Parti Québécois, led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, recently won a minority government in Quebec and plans a future independence referendum. While Quebec's movement is rooted in culture and language, Alberta's is driven by economic grievances. The federal government in Ottawa has expressed concern over potential American interference in the Alberta process, while polling suggests approximately 70% of Albertans favor remaining in Canada.
