UK Fuel Prices Hit 2022 Highs Amid Oil Volatility

The Royal Automobile Club warns that UK fuel prices have reached their highest levels since 2022 due to Middle East conflict and rising oil costs.

Fuel prices in the United Kingdom have surged to their highest levels since 2022, driven by a volatile wholesale oil market and geopolitical conflict. As of September 18, 2026, average UK-wide prices reached 172.02p for unleaded petrol and 195.32p for diesel, with 381 petrol stations charging over £2 per litre for standard diesel.

The Royal Automobile Club reports that petrol drivers now face running costs of 21p per mile, up from 17p per mile in January. The organization attributes the surge to wholesale oil costs returning to over $100 a barrel, fueled by disruptions in the Middle East. Specifically, the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran—including attacks on Iran on February 28 and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—has hampered oil production and transportation.

The cost of filling a standard family car has risen to £94 for petrol and £106 for diesel, with some estimates reaching £110 when pumps hit the £2 mark. This represents an increase of at least £30 since the start of 2026. In response to the financial pressure on households, the organization has called on Chancellor John Healey to intervene and provide support to motorists.
