Sussex Police Deploy Armed Officers for Brighton and Hove Pride

Sussex Police will deploy armed officers, plain-clothed personnel, and specialist teams across Brighton during the upcoming Brighton & Hove Pride celebrations. This security escalation follows a fatal attack at Berlin Pride on July 25, where a suspect identified as Abdul Ballout, who had links to the Islamic State, allegedly drove a van into crowds and attacked people with a machete. The Berlin attack killed one person and injured at least 29 others before police shot the suspect dead.

Sussex Police are implementing the operation as part of a comprehensive security plan developed over several months in coordination with the Brighton & Hove City Council and event organizers to protect an estimated 500,000 attendees. The measures aim to ensure the safety of visitors, residents, and local businesses throughout the city.

UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the violence in Berlin as "absolutely horrific." Bella Sankey, leader of the Brighton & Hove City Council, expressed solidarity with the LGBTQI+ community and stated that city partners are working closely to keep attendees safe during the weekend events.
