King Charles III Visits Guyana to Mark 60 Years of Relations

King Charles III arrived in Guyana for a two-day state visit to celebrate 60 years of bilateral relations and discuss environmental sustainability.

King Charles III arrived in Guyana on October 29, 2026, for a two-day state visit commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Guyana. Welcomed in Georgetown by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and British High Commissioner Joseph Fisher, the monarch's itinerary includes formal talks at State House, a public meeting at the Kingston Seawall bandstand, and meetings with Indigenous representatives from the National Toshaos Council.

During a cultural evening hosted by President Ali, the King sampled a limited edition 2026 rum titled "Royal Welcome" produced by Banks DIH, which he described as "very good." The visit emphasizes biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and the expansion of commercial ties, with bilateral trade currently valued at £2.2 billion annually.

The visit is the second leg of a nine-day Caribbean tour that began in the Bahamas and will conclude with a Commonwealth leaders summit in Antigua and Barbuda. While the King has acknowledged the "great suffering of the past" regarding the transatlantic slave trade, President Ali stated that a formal apology from Britain remains "the next step." The upcoming summit in Antigua and Barbuda is expected to further address the legacy of slavery following renewed demands for reparations from Caribbean nations.
