AIMIM Expels MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig Over Assault Allegations

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen expelled MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig and demanded his resignation following allegations of sexual assault against a minor and a woman.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) expelled Telangana Legislative Council Member (MLC) Mirza Rahmath Baig on August 28, 2026, and demanded his immediate resignation. The party cited indiscipline for the removal, though insiders and opposition leaders link the decision to viral videos allegedly showing Baig assaulting a minor girl and a woman in the Attapur area of Hyderabad.

Baig has denied the allegations, claiming he has worked with integrity and honesty. He previously filed a complaint with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police on August 26, asserting that the videos are AI-generated deepfakes used to blackmail him. Despite the expulsion, Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy confirmed that Baig has not yet submitted his resignation.

Opposition parties have criticized the secrecy surrounding the expulsion. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a court-monitored investigation or a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), arguing that party discipline is not a substitute for justice. BRS and Congress leaders have also called for transparency and the registration of a formal FIR by the Telangana State Police to ensure a full investigation into the sexual harassment claims.
