Tripura Election Commission Orders Repoll After Voting Violence

The Tripura State Election Commission ordered a repoll for three seats in the Gomati district on October 3 following violence and irregularities during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council village committee elections. The repoll will cover the Gamaria Village Committee under Matabari block and the Paharpur Village Committee under Amarpur block.

State Election Commissioner PK Chakraborty cited booth capturing and ballot tampering in Gamaria, as well as symbol allotment and printing errors in Paharpur, as the reasons for the decision. He stated that the repolling would begin at 7 a.m. on October 3.

Original polling on September 28 recorded an overall turnout of 81.21%. However, violence in Maharani left four people injured, including Gomati Superintendent of Police Anirban Das and a candidate from the Tipra Motha party. Vote counting for the elections is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on October 5.
