Max Levchin Predicts Agentic AI Will End Predatory Fee Models
Affirm CEO Max Levchin claims AI agents will soon shop and pay for consumers, eliminating business models that rely on deceptive fees.
Max Levchin, CEO and co-founder of Affirm, stated at the Reuters Momentum AI Finance conference in New York that agentic AI will transform the shopping and payments landscape. He predicts that AI agents will soon handle shopping and payments on behalf of consumers, using their capacity to analyze fine print and identify hidden fees.
Levchin argues this shift will lead to the elimination of business models that "prey on stupidity, or lack of attention," forcing companies to restructure their fee systems. To capitalize on this trend, Affirm is integrating its financial products into digital wallets, browsers, and chatbots.
Other major retailers are pursuing similar autonomous strategies. Walmart announced plans to deploy AI-powered super agents to streamline operations and accelerate e-commerce growth, aiming for online sales to account for 50% of its total revenue within five years.
