Air Canada Charges $30 Fee for Phone Flight Bookings

Air Canada now charges a $30 non-refundable fee per passenger for phone reservations to encourage the use of its website and mobile app.

Air Canada implemented a non-refundable booking fee of $30 plus applicable taxes per passenger for new flight reservations made via its call centers, effective October 15, 2026. The charge applies to both standard fares and Aeroplan reward bookings, meaning a family of four would incur a $120 fee plus taxes.

The airline introduced the surcharge to reduce call center costs and encourage customers to use its website and mobile app, which remain free of reservation fees. Air Canada stated that shifting everyday travel needs to digital tools reduces wait times and allows service agents to focus on situations requiring personalized support.

Exemptions to the fee include passengers with accessibility needs, such as those requiring wheelchair assistance, and services that cannot be completed online. The charge also does not apply to customers calling for support regarding existing reservations or to rebook flights due to travel disruptions like delays or cancellations.

This move aligns Air Canada with other carriers such as WestJet, Flair, and United Airlines, though WestJet and Flair reportedly charge a lower fee of $25. In contrast, competitors like Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines continue to offer phone bookings without extra charges. The policy is part of a broader industry trend of unbundling, where services previously included in standard fares are now charged separately.
