Democratic Candidates Win Key Seats in 2026 Midterms
Democratic candidates secured multiple victories across the United States, including wins for Nigerian-American politicians and local officials in Iowa.
Democratic candidates secured a series of victories across local and state levels during the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. In Iowa, Shawn Olorundami won the race for House District 1, while Senator Catelin Drey secured reelection to Senate District 1. These wins were celebrated at a watch party in Sioux City attended by other Democratic candidates, including Dave Dawson, Jody House, and Ben Mulford.
Four Nigerian-American Democrats also won elective positions nationwide. Will Jawando won the Montgomery County executive race in Maryland with 78.15% of the vote, and Junior Ezeonu secured a seat in the Texas House of Representatives for District 101 after running unopposed. In the District of Columbia, Oye Owolewa won reelection as an at-large council member with 69% of the vote, and Carol Kazeem defended her seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for District 159.
While these candidates were successful, the outcome for Segun Adeyina, an incumbent seeking reelection to the Georgia House of Representatives for District 110, remained undecided as electoral authorities continued to count ballots.
