Ukrainian Veterans Complete 1,500-Kilometer Iron Week Endurance Challenge

Military amputees and war veterans in Ukraine marked Independence Day on Monday by completing Iron Week, a grueling seven-day endurance challenge. Led by Olympic triathlete Danylo Sapunov, the initiative focused on veteran support and unity rather than competition. Participants traveled more than 1,500 kilometers across the country, including routes through war-torn cities in the east.

The challenge consisted of swimming, cycling, and distance running, concluding with a final swim at a lake outside Kyiv. Participants included army serviceman and amputee athlete Yevhenii Lakhnenko and strike-drone operator Maksym Yuzviak. Sapunov emphasized that the event was not a competition, stating that the important thing was to participate and unite as one.

The endurance race coincided with official Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hosted various European leaders to commemorate the anniversary of Ukraine's 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.
