Opposition Leaders Push for Unified Candidate to Challenge Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other opposition figures are coordinating a unified front to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Opposition figures in Kenya are coordinating efforts to field a single presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election to challenge President William Ruto. Speaking from Massachusetts, Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, dismissed reports of a split among opposition leaders and stated he is prepared to make necessary sacrifices to ensure a unified front. Gachagua criticized government-aligned lawmakers for attempting to divide the opposition by inciting regional interests in the Mount Kenya, Kamba, and Kisii regions.
Parallel tensions have emerged in the Mount Kenya region, where Nyandarua Senator John Methu accused Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro of acting as a government mole. Methu claimed Nyoro worked to fragment opposition support and revealed that government agents offered him financial incentives to form a party and join Ruto's camp, an offer he declined. Methu cited Nyoro's conduct during the Finance Bill 2026 debate and Gachagua's impeachment as evidence of government influence.
Adding to the pressure, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi asserted that Ruto is likely to lose the 2027 election due to a loss of support in former strongholds, particularly following Gachagua's impeachment. Omondi urged the Luo community to reject the president and seek political alternatives beyond the ODM party.
