IEBC Warns of Violence Ahead of Ol Kalou By-Election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has finalized preparations for the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16, 2026. The seat became vacant following the death of Member of Parliament David Kiaraho in March. The contest is primarily between United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Muchina and Democracy for the Citizens Party candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau.

Campaigning concluded on July 12 with rallies in Ngorika and at the Arboretum, though the closing phase was marked by rising tensions. In Rwariondo, a campaign banner belonging to Sammy Douglas Kamau was vandalized. The IEBC, alongside the National Police Service and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, held a joint briefing on July 14 to address security concerns. Chairperson Erastus Ethekon warned that political actors have mobilized goons to intimidate voters, noting reports of voter bribery, unlawful night campaigns, and one death. Violence has also reportedly spread into the neighboring Gilgil Constituency.

To ensure integrity, the commission banned mobile phones inside voting booths to prevent vote-buying schemes. Erastus Ethekon clarified that voters must present an original national identity card or a valid Kenyan passport, debunking claims that physical IDs were unnecessary. The commission further warned that any campaigning beyond the gazetted timeline will lead to prosecution, including potential fines up to Sh1 million and imprisonment. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho confirmed the deployment of security personnel to protect voters and election materials.
