UK Plans Full Trade Ban on Illegal Israeli Settlements
UK Trade Minister Chris Bryant announced plans to ban all import and export transactions of goods and services with illegal Israeli settlements.
UK Minister for Trade Chris Bryant announced Wednesday that the British government is developing a comprehensive plan to ban all import and export transactions of goods and services with illegal Israeli settlements. Speaking before the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee, Bryant stated the government intends to transition from simply labeling goods to a full prohibition, citing strong moral and legal arguments.
The proposed ban targets physical goods and service exports, including mortgages, legal advice, accountancy services, and financial support provided to settlement developers. The Department for Business and Trade and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office are currently collaborating to determine if existing sanctions frameworks can be utilized to bypass the need for primary legislation.
Bryant acknowledged that enforcement remains a challenge because settlement goods are frequently labeled as Israeli to avoid tariffs. This move follows a failed attempt by the European Union to reach a qualified majority for a similar ban. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned those European efforts, suggesting such actions do not advance shared interests.
