AustralianSuper Targets AI Infrastructure to Hedge Market Volatility
AustralianSuper is focusing its artificial intelligence investments on chipmakers and data centers to manage volatility in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
AustralianSuper, Australia's largest pension fund with A$430 billion in assets, is concentrating its artificial intelligence investments on the infrastructure and hardware that power the industry. Mark Hargraves, the fund's head of international equities and private equity, stated that the fund is focusing on what he calls the "picks and shovels" of AI to navigate current market turbulence and valuation doubts.
The fund maintains significant holdings in Nvidia, valued at approximately A$3.05 billion, as well as A$2.3 billion each in Microsoft and Alphabet. Other stakes include Meta, Broadcom, Micron, SK Hynix, and SpaceX. Hargraves noted that AI-related stocks now represent about 40 percent of the global equities market, describing the theme's emergence as the fastest he has witnessed in over 30 years.
While the fund is a pre-IPO investor in Anthropic, Hargraves declined to comment on specific intentions regarding the company's upcoming share sale. The fund's strategy prioritizes chipmakers and hyperscaler data centers, which Hargraves believes are best positioned to weather the speed of change in the sector.
