Chip Shortage Disrupts Fiat Production Across Italy

Stellantis reports that an electronic component shortage is disrupting Fiat production in Italy, threatening halts at three major plants through December.

An electronic component shortage for engine control units is causing significant disruptions to Fiat production in Italy. Stellantis announced on November 2 that the chip shortage impacted October sales, specifically for the Fiat Pandina, and may persist through November and December.

Production halts are expected at the Pomigliano plant, where the Pandina is manufactured, and the Mirafiori plant, which produces the Fiat 500. The disruption may also affect the Termoli plant, where the N3 GSE engine used in both models is assembled. Stellantis stated that the company and Fiat are working with the highest priority to identify alternative solutions and restore normal operations.

Separately, the Mirafiori plant began a three-week production halt in mid-October. While this earlier stoppage was caused by a different component shortage, labor unions attribute the halt in part to weak demand for the Fiat 500.
