Anthropic Signs $45 Billion Compute Deal With Nscale

AI developer Anthropic PBC has agreed to pay $45 billion over six years to rent cloud computing capacity from NScale Global Holdings Limited at the Monarch Compute Campus in Mason County, West Virginia. The deal provides Anthropic with approximately 460 megawatts of power utilizing Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, with capacity expected to come online in late 2027. Anthropic will rent roughly one-third of the campus storage space as it prepares for an initial public offering and scales products like Claude Code.

The agreement follows a summer decision by another technology firm to walk away from the site. For Nscale, the British infrastructure provider, securing Anthropic as a tenant is critical as it prepares for its own initial public offering as early as next month. The full development of the Monarch campus, which includes an on-site power plant, is estimated to cost $71 billion and will eventually total 1.35 gigawatts of power.

Governor Patrick Morrisey described the investment as an "extraordinary vote of confidence" in the state's energy strategy. An economic impact study suggests the campus will generate 6,000 jobs over two years, including 700 permanent STEM positions during the first phase, and provide $105 million in tax revenues. To reduce reliance on traditional cloud giants, Anthropic has also secured massive compute agreements with Space Exploration Technologies Corp., Volta Infra Holdings, and Fluidstack.
