Election Officials Train for Federal Seizures and Poll Threats

Local election officials in South Carolina are undergoing specialized training to prepare for an increase in threats and unprecedented tactics ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections. Trainers from the Brennan Center for Justice and The Committee for Safe and Secure Elections are preparing staff for scenarios such as the use of drones to drop pamphlets and the presence of armed federal agents at polling sites.

Gary Restaino of the Brennan Center warned that the execution of federal search warrants to seize ballots and machines could obstruct the tabulation and certification process. Restaino noted that such actions would represent a departure from previous administrations. While experts maintain that federal warrants require judicial approval and express confidence in the overall voting system, the demand for this specific training has nearly doubled since 2024.

Additional training focuses on psychological resilience and managing confrontations with conspiracy-minded voters. This curriculum is driven by the experiences of Tina Barton, who faced death threats during the 2020 election. The program aims to provide officials with the mental tools to handle high-stress environments and targeted harassment.
