Chinese Super Apps Block AI Agents Amid Ecosystem Fragmentation
Chinese super apps like WeChat and Alipay are blocking agentic AI tools, hindering the development of interoperable artificial intelligence across the country's fragmented mobile ecosystem.
A report from Lawfare media indicates that the prevalence of "do everything" super apps and a fragmented mobile ecosystem are obstructing the development of agentic artificial intelligence in China. These closed ecosystems, led by platforms such as WeChat and Alipay, block AI agents from accessing essential user data, including payment credentials, emails, and calendars.
This friction is exemplified by the Doubao phone, which features an embedded AI agent capable of reading screens and mimicking user actions. Major applications including Taobao, Alipay, and WeChat blocked the agent due to concerns regarding data exposure and fraud. The situation is further complicated by the absence of Google services in China, which has forced manufacturers to create proprietary software layers that require developers to adapt their code for each individual brand.
As a result, a regulatory competition is emerging within China to establish the standards and guardrails that will govern security authentication and data access for agentic AI.
