Omar Abdullah Urges Ladakh Leaders to Demand Written Guarantees

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah advised leaders from Ladakh and Kargil to reject verbal assurances from the central government and instead demand written, signed commitments or formal affidavits. Speaking in Pulwama, Srinagar, and Amritsar between September 16 and 17, 2026, Abdullah cited the experience of Jammu and Kashmir, claiming a verbal promise to restore statehood after assembly elections remained unfulfilled for nearly two years.

Abdullah's warnings follow September 9 talks between the Ministry of Home Affairs and representatives from the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance regarding constitutional safeguards for land and jobs. While the central government described those talks as successful, Ladakh leaders expressed skepticism and planned protests. Abdullah urged these groups to secure written guarantees to avoid the pitfalls faced by his own administration, though he encouraged other agitating groups in the Kashmir Valley to pursue dialogue over protests.

On September 17, Abdullah called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In response, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma suggested that if Abdullah believes his government lacks authority, he should dissolve the Assembly. Sharma argued that because the current Assembly was elected under a Union Territory framework, fresh elections would be required once statehood is restored.
