Scotland Screen Sector Projected to Reach £1bn by 2030
Scotland's screen sector is growing rapidly toward a £1bn valuation, though critics warn of low local hiring and environmental damage from tourism.
Screen Scotland and other industry bodies project the national screen sector will be worth £1bn to the economy by 2030. High-profile productions including Outlander and The Traitors have driven economic growth through employment and increased screen tourism.
Despite this growth, the boom has faced criticism over labor practices. Peter Strachan of the Standing Up For Scotland’s Screen Talent campaign group reported that only 6% of production staff on the third series of The Traitors were Scottish, despite BBC quotas. Interim Executive Director David Smith noted a decline in shows commissioned from Scottish production companies and called for a more sustainable project mix.
Increased visitor traffic to filming sites such as Culloden and Glenfinnan has also created challenges. Police Scotland issued warnings regarding anti-social behavior and dangerous parking, while VisitScotland works to mitigate environmental deterioration caused by the surge in tourism.
