India Needs Up to $435 Billion for AI Infrastructure

OmniScience Insights Labs reports that India may require investments ranging from $350 billion to $435 billion by 2030 to support its digital economy. The research firm estimates the country needs 19-23 gigawatts of operational capacity by 2030, a sharp increase from the current 1.6 gigawatts. AI infrastructure is expected to drive the bulk of this spending, requiring $270-340 billion, while traditional data centers will need $77-96 billion.

This projected growth is fueled by the adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data localization. Such a scale of infrastructure could demand 160 terawatt-hours of electricity annually by 2030, which represents approximately 6% of India's projected power consumption.

While the Government of India has provided tax incentives and infrastructure status for large data centers, helping secure $160-200 billion in announced investments, the report notes that further expansion relies on solving challenges in water management, power availability, and transmission infrastructure.
