London Bankers Earn £1.2bn Amid UK Takeover Surge

Investment bankers and lawyers in London earned over £1.2bn in fees as the value of UK company mergers and acquisitions rose 175% to $132.9bn.

Investment bankers and lawyers in London have earned more than £1.2bn in fees during a 2026 takeover surge. The value of mergers and acquisitions involving companies listed on the London Stock Exchange rose 175% to $132.9bn, driven primarily by American buyers and private equity firms targeting undervalued British businesses.

JP Morgan emerged as the busiest advisor during this period, while Slaughter and May led among law firms. The surge in activity resulted in record bonuses, with some banks authorizing payouts as high as 25 times annual salaries. However, the trend has raised concerns regarding the long-term health of the London stock market due to a decline in new listings.

The windfall has sparked backlash from labor unions, including the GMB and the Trades Union Congress, which are calling for windfall taxes on lenders amid a national cost-of-living crisis. In response to these pressures, JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned the UK government against raising bank taxes in the upcoming October budget.
