Industry Leaders Drive Shift Toward Autonomous Agentic AI Systems

Technology companies and researchers are deploying agentic AI to move beyond generative chatbots toward autonomous systems capable of planning and executing complex multistep processes.

The technology industry is shifting toward agentic AI, a class of systems capable of autonomous action, planning, and learning. Unlike generative AI chatbots that primarily summarize information, agentic AI acts as an autonomous teammate to execute multistep processes. This transition is particularly evident in IT operations, where companies like Fabrix.ai Inc. are using coordinated agents to automate the entire pipeline from data ingestion to resolution.

A joint report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston Consulting Group, based on a survey of 2,000 executives, found that 35% of organizations already use the technology, while 76% of respondents view these systems as coworkers rather than tools. Major developers including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Salesforce are pursuing consumer applications such as automated travel bookings and medical bill management. Researchers note that while the concept is rooted in 1990s multi-agent system research, the term agentic has gained recent traction to distinguish technical workflows from marketing hype.

Despite the momentum, significant hurdles remain. Gartner predicts nearly 40% of early agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 due to poor data infrastructure and ambiguous objectives. Experts suggest that successful adoption requires a culture-first approach focusing on human-AI partnership to mitigate employee resistance and the potential displacement of middle management.
