British Airways Flight Returns to London After Mid-Air Emergency

British Airways flight BA295 returned to London Heathrow on Monday after a technical issue caused a rapid descent over Ireland.

A British Airways Boeing 777 traveling from London Heathrow to Chicago returned to its departure point on Monday, October 5, after declaring a mid-air emergency. Approximately 30 minutes into the flight, the aircraft experienced an unspecified technical issue while flying over Ireland, resulting in a rapid descent from a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet to between 9,000 and 28,000 feet.

Flight data indicates the descent occurred over seven to 10 minutes and appeared to be controlled. Following the incident, the plane circled over the Bristol Channel for approximately four hours to burn off fuel before landing safely at Heathrow just after 5 p.m. local time.

All passengers and crew disembarked normally, and no serious injuries were reported. The airline is currently coordinating replacement travel and overnight accommodation for affected passengers in accordance with Civil Aviation Authority regulations. While the specific nature of the technical fault has not been disclosed, aviation authorities and the airline are expected to investigate the cause of the emergency.
