Coalition Forms to Oppose Wyoming Property Tax Initiative

A coalition of interest groups has formed the VOTE NO ON PROP 1 political action committee to oppose a property tax relief ballot initiative scheduled for the November general election in Wyoming. The measure, known as the People's Initiative and spearheaded by Brent Bien, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, would indefinitely exempt half of a residential property's assessed value from taxes for owners who reside in the home at least six months a year and have lived in the state for one year.

The Wyoming Department of Revenue estimates the initiative would cause a $124.7 million revenue decrease in its first year, primarily impacting local government services and public schools. The opposition coalition includes the Wyoming Taxpayers Association, the Wyoming Education Association, and the Wyoming County Commissioners Association, all of whom argue that property taxes are essential for funding community services.

Brent Bien maintains that current legislative efforts to provide tax relief are insufficient. He has characterized the opposition to the initiative as an attempt to preserve big government.
