The Republic of China Army will establish a drone battalion in Penghu County by July 2026 to enhance early warning capabilities and anti-landing defenses. Based in Magong under the ROC Army Penghu Defense Command, the new unit will upgrade an existing squadron to improve anti-blockade operations and integrate drone surveillance with anti-ship missile kill chains.
This deployment is part of a broader strategic initiative led by Army Chief of Staff Chen Chien-yi to deploy drone battalions across five primary theaters of operations. These theaters cover northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan, as well as the strategic position in the Taiwan Strait. Three of these battalions were already operational as of April 2026.
